…Over the years living in Jerusalem, God has used many little object lessons to make Himself and His Word real to me. In these devotionals, I want to share them with you. My prayer is that you, too, will drink with me from the fresh water He gives. Don't read a a portion from this and then go on about your day. This is only to whet your appetite for more! Light a candle, if it will help you to be aware of His presence. Dig into the Scriptures with your ears open to the Spirit of God. Meditate on what you have read. Leave yourself time to let it sink in. Be still and silent before Him. Then as you pray, you may want to do as I do -- journal your prayers… Read the full introduction »

Posted: Aug 20th, 2010Late one evening in May, 2001, my son Joel heard a loud noise from his apartment in the Talpiot area of Jerusalem. It sounded like a large truck of gravel overturning. Curious to see what had happened, Joel and his friend Don ran down to Hebron road, from where they saw a cloud of dust, and heard screaming voices. When they arrived at the Versailles wedding hall, they were shocked at what they saw. The whole side of the building was gone. Looking up they saw a surreal scene. Tables were sitting in the corner of the room with candles …

Posted: Aug 6th, 2010This has been a sad week in Israel. As I write this six coffins are en route from Romania with the remains of some of the very best, young, talented brave men. We still don't know why their helicopter crashed on Monday, but today in our grief, the cause is secondary.

Posted: Aug 5th, 2010In our early years in Jerusalem we lived in a neighborhood enclosed within a low stone wall, iron fence and gates, with a courtyard in the middle. Here the kids would play and neighbors would mingle. But one neighbor tended to blame our boys for all the litter, the damage, the mischief that ever happened, in spite of the fact that there were a dozen other kids who could have done it.

Posted: Jul 22nd, 2010I still smile when I remember our friend, Jim, who out of a sincere heart and a strong revulsion for violence, had taken a stand as one who would not take up arms. To be fair, he did not apply this to others, it was simply his own personal conviction. But one day, close to his workplace in Jerusalem, some loud shouts, even screams got his attention. He glanced over a stone wall and saw that a young man had a double-ended knife and was violently attacking innocent people waiting at a bus stop. Blood was everywhere, and in the …

Posted: Jul 18th, 2010The first time I ventured the hike in the beautiful Yehudiya valley northwest of the Kinneret, I was warned to stretch well first. It wasn't just a nature walk. I enjoyed the rigor of the climbs, inspired on by the fresh vistas at every turn. As we criss-crossed creeks, I carefully rolled up my pant legs, even removed my shoes and socks, so I wouldn't get wet.

Posted: May 11th, 2010Only once in my memory did we have a real snowstorm in Jerusalem. It lasted almost a week and over a third of Jerusalem's trees were destroyed. We still have a video of that! Large branches fell on and crushed cars. Power lines were broken from the weight of snow and ice. Much of the city was without electricity. Only brave ones (like we Canadians) dared to go out and drive.

Posted: May 4th, 2010Wayne and I visited the Ukraine in 1995. At that time most of the city of Odessa was still poor. The common areas were unkempt and buildings were in disrepair. Stray dogs were everywhere, balding from their exposure to the radiation of Chernobyl. With a translator, we visited a lonely Jewish man who had formerly owned a shoe factory. Some of his family members had immigrated to Israel, and we wanted to encourage him to do the same.
