…Over the years living in Jerusalem, God has used many little object lessons to make Himself and His Word real to me. In these devotionals, I want to share them with you. My prayer is that you, too, will drink with me from the fresh water He gives. Don't read a a portion from this and then go on about your day. This is only to whet your appetite for more! Light a candle, if it will help you to be aware of His presence. Dig into the Scriptures with your ears open to the Spirit of God. Meditate on what you have read. Leave yourself time to let it sink in. Be still and silent before Him. Then as you pray, you may want to do as I do -- journal your prayers… Read the full introduction »

  • When we arrived in Israel in 1983, a very pretty two-storey apartment with a small garden awaited us.  It was owned by an orthodox Rabbi from Canada who saw us "gentiles" as a prophetic sign - that the nations would be coming up to Jerusalem to worship the God of Israel.
  • You and I have a secret place, and a secret weapon as well.  It's right where you are sitting right now.  You have a private line to heaven that can't be intercepted.
  • And the word of the LORD came to me, saying, Jeremiah, what do you see? And I said, I see an almond branch. Then the LORD said to me, You have seen well, for I am watching over my word to perform it. Jeremiah 1:11- 12 Early every spring, the hills of Israel are adorned with blossoms. Here and there will be an almond tree, resplendent in delicate blossoms, ranging from pale to darker pink. We sing songs about them "Shkedia porachat..."
  • On Jerusalem's King David Street, immediately next to the YMCA (where for years we held services) there is something VERY interesting to see.  It seems like a prophetic picture, and I can't help pointing it out to people when we pass by. My heart is warmed by the truth that these lions represent.  It is not only Jerusalem, and Israel that are being watched over.  It is you and it is me.

  • On the first Sunday in July, 1995, something unthinkable happened in Israel.  A raging fire consumed an estimated two million trees. This was a heartbreaking day for a land that treasures its trees. Today, fifteen years later, the Jerusalem Forest is again beautiful.  But now there are trees and plants that could not grow there before.  This forest will be a stronger one, for it is planted in soil cleansed and renewed by the fire.  Even the rainfall in the area has greatly increased over the years because of surrounding growth.
  • God has given us authority that we rarely if ever use.  We sigh and look at our circumstances gloomily, forgetting that we can pray.  We resign ourselves to poverty, sickness, broken relationships, and loss as if it is all beyond our control.  I'm not suggesting we try and "boss" God, but He has given us authority, in prayer, in wisdom and in decisive actions that flow from a transformed heart and a renewed mind.
  • In the Clal building in Jerusalem (where all of our facilities are located) if you are waiting for an elevator on the lower parking area, you may hear an unexpected sound.  Chirping birds.  I hear them often, and always with a little sadness.  Here are creatures meant to soar in the skies, and instead they fly low and carefully from dusty shelf to dusty pipe. Some of them find their way to the shopping concourse atrium, much more airy and light.  For them, this is probably heaven.  But they are still nowhere near the place for which they were created. …
  • Like a chameleon, we take on the ways of those who surround us. Our tendency to do this varies with individuals, but this phenomenon is well known, and God knows it. We become like our spouse, our friends, our society, for better or for worse. God wants it to be for better.

  • February 11, 1986 will forever be etched on my memory. I, along with my family, along with every family in Israel sat riveted to the television to watch a hero's welcome. Crowds cheered as Russian refusenik Anatoly Sharansky descended the stairs of an airplane, looking somewhat haggard and bewildered. I don't think there was a dry eye in all of Israel that day! We watched as he placed a call to President Reagan, thanking him for his help and release. Two days later I encountered him and his wife, Avital, out shopping for groceries. Here in Jerusalem, the city of …
  • Do you even dare ask for His face? Are you willing to look into His eyes and see what is there?
