How To Pray For Israel

Regardless of the Situation

In light of the rapidly-changing circumstances and media distortions regarding the current crisis in Israel, it can be difficult to know exactly how to pray. The following guidelines will help you to intercede consistently and confidently, in the knowledge that you are praying in line with God’s Word.

Some Basics of Prayer

1) Pray the Word

It is as we pray in line with God’s will that we have confidence He will hear and answer – in His timing:

“And this is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him.” 1 John 5:14-15

How can we have this confidence? Because:

“God is not a man, that He should lie; nor a son of man, that He should repent; has He said, and will He not do it? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?” Num 23:19

Therefore God declares:

“So shall My word be which goes forth from My mouth; it shall not return to Me empty, without accomplishing what I desire, and without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it.” Isa 55:11

Remember:

“Forever, O LORD, Thy word is settled in heaven.” Psa 119:89

And:

“The grass withers, the flower fades: but the word of our God stands forever.” Isa 40:8

Also:

“And the word of the LORD came to me saying, ‘What do you see, Jeremiah?’ And I said, ‘I see a rod of an almond [shaked] tree.’ Then the LORD said to me, ‘You have seen well, for I am watching over [shoked – watch over] My word to perform it.’” Jer 1:11-12

“Who is there who speaks and it comes to pass, unless the Lord has commanded it?” Lam 3:37

2) Focus on sanctifying God’s name

In Hebraic thought, ‘name’ = ‘essential nature.’ This is the bottom line for what the Lord is doing in Israel, in the church and in our individual lives. Saints throughout the Tanach almost always have this as the focus of their prayers!

For example, Samuel exhorts the people of Israel when they demanded a human king:

“...Do not fear. You have committed all this evil, yet do not turn aside from following the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart… For the LORD will not abandon His people on account of His great name, because the LORD has been pleased to make a people for Himself. Moreover as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the LORD by ceasing to pray for you: but I will instruct you in the good and right way.” 1 Sam 12:20,22-23

The Psalms use this foundational concept frequently:

“Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of Thy name; and deliver us, and forgive our sins, for Thy name’s sake. Why should the nations say, ‘Where is their God?’ Let there be known among the nations in our sight, vengeance for the blood of Thy servants, which has been shed.” Psa 79:9-10

“Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to Thy name give glory, because of Thy lovingkindness, because of Thy truth. Why should the nations say, ‘Where, now, is their God?’ But our God is in the heavens; He does whatever He pleases.” Psa 115:1-3

The most important and up-to-date verses of Scripture relating to Israel’s current situation are in Ezekiel chapters 35 and 36. God says there:

“Therefore, say to the house of Israel, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD; “It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for My holy name, which you have profaned among the nations where you went. And I will vindicate the holiness of My great name which has been profaned among the nations, which you have profaned in their midst. Then the nations will know that I am the LORD,” declares the Lord GOD, “when I prove Myself holy among you in their sight.”’” Ezek 36:22-23

Messiah Yeshua commands us:

“Pray, then, in this way: Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed [sanctified] be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” Matt 6:9-10

3) Stand in the gap

If the Body of Messiah does not stand in the gap for what God wants to do in and through Israel and the Jewish people, who else will He use?

“Therefore He said that He would destroy them, had not Moses His chosen one stood in the breach before Him, to turn away His wrath from destroying them.” Psa 106:23

How did Moses accomplish that? Read Exodus 32:9-14.

God has called some of you as watchmen for this nation – for His glory!

“On your walls, O Jerusalem, I have appointed watchmen; all day and all night they will never keep silent. You who remind the LORD, take no rest for yourselves; and give Him no rest, until He establishes and makes Jerusalem a praise in the earth.” Isa 62:6-7

God so desires to have mercy that He actually seeks for someone to turn His judgment away:

“And I searched for a man among them who should build up the wall and stand in the gap before Me for the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found no one. Thus I have poured out My indignation on them…” Ezek 22:30-31a

Daniel 9:4-19 is a powerful example of intercession. Note – Daniel knew that now was the time to restore Zion but, instead of rejoicing, he used that knowledge to empower his prayers! Note also how he finishes his intercession:

“Now therefore, O our God, hear the prayer of thy servant, and his supplications, and cause thy face to shine upon thy sanctuary that is desolate, for the Lord’s sake. O my God, incline thine ear, and hear; open thine eyes, and behold our desolations, and the city which is called by thy name: for we do not present our supplications before thee for our righteousnesses, but for thy great mercies. O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, hearken and do; defer not, for thine own sake, O my God: for thy city and thy people are called by thy name.” Dan 9:17-19

What to pray when praying for Israel

Regardless of Israel’s current situation, these specific areas can constantly be lifted up in prayer for Israel and the Jewish people.

Cry out to the Lord that Israel would cry out

“Call upon Me in the day of trouble: I shall rescue you, and you will honor Me.” Psa 50:15

“(If) My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray, and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” 2 Chr 7:14

Plead for mercy in the midst of God’s righteous judgments

“Restore us, O God of our salvation, and cause Thine indignation toward us to cease.” Psa 85:4

“LORD, I have heard the report about Thee and I fear. O LORD, revive Thy work in the midst of the years, in the midst of the years make it known; in wrath remember mercy.” Hab 3:2

Pray for aliyah

“The LORD builds up Jerusalem; He gathers the outcasts of Israel.” Psa 147:2

“Do not fear, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and gather you from the west. I will say to the north, ‘Give them up!’ and to the south, ‘Do not hold them back,’ bring My sons from afar, and my daughters from the ends of the earth, everyone who is called by My name, and whom I have created for My glory, whom I have formed, even whom I have made.” Isa 43:5-7

“For thus says LORD; ‘Sing aloud with gladness for Jacob, and shout among the chiefs of the nations; proclaim, give praise, and say, “O LORD, save Thy people, the remnant of Israel.” Behold, I am bringing them from the north country, and I will gather them from the remote parts of the earth, among them the blind and the lame, the woman with child and she who is in labor with child, together; a great company, they shall return here. With weeping they shall come, and by supplication I will lead them; I will make them walk by streams of waters, on a straight path in which they shall not stumble; for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is My firstborn.’ Hear the word of the LORD, O nations, and declare it in the coastlands afar off, and say, ‘He who scattered Israel will gather him, and keep him as a shepherd keeps his flock.’” Jer 31:7-10

“And I will vindicate the holiness of My great name, which has been profaned among the nations, which you have profaned in their midst. Then the nations will know that I am the LORD,” declares the Lord GOD, “when I prove Myself holy among you in their sight. For I will take you from the nations, gather you from all the lands, and bring you into your own land. Then will I sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness, and from all your idols.” Ezek 36:23-25

Pray against any “Land for Peace” process

“The land, moreover, shall not be sold permanently, for the land is Mine; for you are but aliens and sojourners with Me.” Lev 25:23

“Then you will know that I, the LORD, have heard all your revilings which you have spoken against the mountains of Israel saying, ‘They are laid desolate; they are given to us for food.’ And you have spoken arrogantly against Me and have multiplied your words against Me; I have heard.” Ezek 35:12-13

“For behold, in those days and in that time, when I restore the fortunes of Judah and Jerusalem, I will gather all the nations, and bring them down to the valley of Jehoshaphat. Then I will enter into judgment with them there on behalf of My people and My inheritance, Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations; and they have divided up My land.” Joel 3:1-2

Intercede for the salvation of Moslems through the destruction of Islam

“Fill their faces with dishonor, that they may seek Thy name, O LORD. Let them be ashamed and dismayed forever; and let them be humiliated and perish, that they may know that Thou alone, whose name is the LORD, art the Most High over all the earth.” Psa 83:16-18

“Then it will come about that any who are left of all the nations that went against Jerusalem will go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to celebrate the Feast of Booths.” Zech 14:16

Pray for the salvation of Israel

“And thus all Israel will be saved; just as it is written, ‘The Deliverer will come from Zion, He will remove ungodliness from Jacob. And this is My covenant with them, when I take away their sins.” Rom 11:26-27

“O God, restore us, and cause Thy face to shine upon us, and we will be saved … O God of hosts, restore us, and cause Thy face to shine upon us, and we will be saved … O LORD God of hosts, restore us; cause Thy face to shine upon us, and we will be saved.” Psa 80:3,7,19

“And I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of supplication, so that they will look on Me whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him, like the bitter weeping over a first-born.” Zech 12:10

Intercede for the Church to awaken to her responsibility to Israel

“But Ruth said, “Do not urge me to leave you or turn back from following you; for where you go, I will go, and where you lodge, I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God, my God.” Ruth 1:16

“Then Mordecai told them to reply to Esther, “Do not imagine that you in the king’s palace, can escape any more than all the Jews. For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place and you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows whether you have not attained royalty for such a time as this?” Est 4:13-14

Conclusion

God ultimately is the One who will do it: all we do is pray and be willing to be obedient. It is a work of His grace and mercy.

“Thou art my King, O God; command victories for Jacob.” Psa 44:4
bq(scripture). “The end of all things is at hand; therefore, be of sound judgment and sober spirit for the purpose of prayer.” 1 Pet 4:7

Proclaim:

“Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him. For he spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast. The LORD nullifies the counsel of the nations; He frustrates the plans of the peoples. The counsel of the LORD stands forever, the plans of His heart from generation to generation. Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people whom He has chosen for His own inheritance.” Psa 33:8-12
