Seven years ago I left the only home I had ever known in Canada. I lived in the same city and attended the same congregation for practically my entire life. I bid farewell to life long friends; had one last skate at the arena; one last country drive; one last lazy day at the cottage and one last look at the brilliant fall leaves. Then I came to Israel, to Jerusalem, the center of the world – the crossroads of all nations and I knew no one.

Jerusalem is unlike any place in the world – this should come as no surprise. But what is surprising is that the eternal city is in constant motion and change. For some, this is a terrifying reality. For others, it is simply the rhythm of life.

Even in Yeshua’s time Jerusalem was a bustling city. It was a city of commerce, a place of pilgrimage; full of needy people, distractions, attractions, the groanings and the vitality of life. Yet in His short time of ministry, when one would think He should be making a name for Himself, Yeshua didn’t devote most of His time to the masses, but rather to a small, unlikely group of followers and often in small group settings. In fact, He could often be found in a home, gathered around a table for a meal. In Matthew 9:11, the Pharisees, who see Him eating with tax collectors and ‘sinners’, question Yeshua’s conduct.

Of all creation, human beings – people – are the only eternal beings. When we invest into the lives of others, we are investing into eternity. We were created for eternity and we were created for relationship, with God and with one another.

It is within a small group that we can truly share our heart. We allow ourselves to be included in the lives of others and include others in our lives. We can learn from each other, we can encourage each other; we can share in our joys and sorrows, disappointments and uncertainties.

As we embark on a new season of congregational life, don’t journey alone. Find a few travel companions whom you will share the journey ahead. Find a home for your heart in a small group this fall, where prayer, bible study, outreach and fellowship will take place. But most importantly, find a home for your heart among the family of believers. Yeshua is resident in the hearts of His people and your heart can be at home in fellowship with His people.
