In the days of Abraham and the patriarchs, they pitched their tents and built their altars. They were nomadic like the Bedouin of today in the Middle East. They lived in tents and followed their flocks, digging wells as they needed them. But what was permanent for them were the altars they built as memorials to God. Even when they moved on, the altar remained behind as a testimony of God’s faithfulness.
Today we tend to build our tents (permanent homes) and pitch our altars. What should be permanent in our lives – our faith, commitments to God, and our covenant relationships with others have become temporary. We stay in committed relationships when it’s comfortable to do so, and we move on when the discomfort becomes too much for us. But God is looking for women who will be faithful at all costs!
