The month of December is the darkest month of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. During this time we search for ways to light our home. Candles abound and we look forward to the Festival of Lights and Dedication (Hanukkah). We are reminded of the Great Light that appeared to the world.
John 12:46 “I have come as a Light into the world, so that whoever believes in Me should not remain in darkness.”
This time of year I find myself talking out our Hanukkiah (Menorah for Hanukkah) and checking that all is ready for the upcoming holiday. This gives a rich opportunity to look at how the Temple of Old was lit.
In the Holy Place there stood a Menorah (7 branches) and its light was to burn eternally. The Priests had to ensure that the wicks were trimmed and the bowls of oil were clean. The oil for the Menorah needed to be sought out for with great care. It must be high quality oil that would give a long and clean light.
When we look at the re-dedication of the Temple we need to look with reverence at God’s special place. The Temple of the Holy Spirit is within us. 1Corinthians 6:19 “Or do you not know that your body is a Temple of the Holy Spirit in you, whom you have of God? And you are not your own”. If His temple is within us we need to assure that our temple is well lit.
Is the Menorah of the Temple in our life brightly lit, or are the lamps running out of oil, on the verge of extinguishing? When have we trimmed the wicks lately, or refilled the bowls of oil? Have we allowed God to clean away the dross in the bowl of oil?
We need the Lord to refine our oil, so that we can shine brightly. Many people make New Year resolutions. At this time of dedication let us look into our lives; dedicate our lives, families, community to be used by the Almighty in a mighty way this year.
Yeshua is the Shamash, the servant, the central candle in the Hanukkiah. He is the light unto the world and a light unto our paths. He provides a way for all those that will follow in His footsteps. It is through Him alone that we are lit up with lasting oil. John 1:9 says that He was the true Light; He enlightens every man coming into the world.
Let us walk filled with the Spirit of God, bubbling over with Joy and Light unto the world. May Yeshua be the Light that is shining through our eyes, hands and feet.
