God has given Chuck & Karen Cohen a vision for the restoration of the Church to its biblical foundations. Their book “Roots of our Faith” addresses many key controversial issues in the Body of Messiah, particularly those relating to the Church’s relationship with Israel.
Pastor Wayne Hilsden speaks of our need to understand and identify with the roots of our faith, and co-operate with the Lord in His purpose to create one new man from both Jew and Gentile.
King of Kings Community Jerusalem seeks to be a biblically-based congregation, taking the first Jerusalem church as a model.
In Acts 2:41-47 we read:
Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need. So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.
In line with the above verses describing the first congregation in this city, and in common with most other biblically-based congregations, we teach, we fellowship, we break bread, we pray, we worship, we pray for healing and miraculous intervention in our situation, and we share with those in need.
However, the New Testament also shows many models of individuals and congregations with unique giftings and specific callings. King of Kings Community Jerusalem has a specific calling in this nation of Israel, and in this city of Jerusalem.
Situated as we are, in Jerusalem, we have a unique opportunity to express the reality of the “one new man,” spoken of in Ephesians 2:15.
While every congregation should have a heart for the Jewish people ( Romans 11:11 ) this is our particular burden and focus. This is not racial discrimination. In fact, we firmly believe that when Jewish people come to faith they will once again take up their role as a “light to the nations”. This will ultimately lead to salvation for Gentile nations, including the Arab peoples ( Romans 11:11-15 ).
We are working to restore the Hebrew roots of our faith.
We have also taken upon ourselves the task of helping the Church around the world recover her Hebrew roots and take up her obligation of supporting and reaching out to the Jewish people, to whom the church owes a great debt.
Our motivation for this task is in order that:
In order to further the accomplishment of this, we produce teaching materials, promote seminars and conferences, produce Hebraic music CD’s, and other resource materials, in support of this message.
We also invite and welcome pilgrim visitors from around the world. Rather than viewing them as an intrusion, we see their visit as another way of reaching more Christians around the world with the message.
The eyes of the world see Jerusalem as the stumbling stone in the Middle East conflict. Therefore we seek to be living demonstrations of the fact that there is a better way – that when we allow Jesus to take charge of our lives, we can find peace with God and peace with one another.
There is an incredibly diverse mix of nationalities represented in our congregation. So we work extra hard at being “one.”
A large number of people who fellowship at King of Kings work within one of the many para-church ministries in Jerusalem, such as ICEJ, CFI, Bridges for Peace, Israel College of the Bible, etc. This provides us with opportunities to support each other in ministry, to pray for one another, and to learn how to complement one another, instead of competing.
